Founder of Taize Community Killed

Brother Roger welcomes Pope John Paul II
on the latter's visit to Taizé, France

A postcard of Taizé's evening vigil

This news comes as a shock for me because it brings me back to my last World Youth Day pilgrimage held in France in 1997. On our way to Paris for the 12th WYD, our group decided to visit the community of Taizé, an interdenominational Christian community of brothers located in Taizé, France.

The founder of this community was 90-year old Brother Roger, who was recently stabbed to death by a Romanian woman during a prayer service attended by about 2,500 people.

The entire story which I found by way of Amy Welborn's Open Book can be read here.

Yes, I'm really saddened that he was taken so tragically in his old age. Apparently many are still in shock and the pilgrims in Cologne are praying for him. I heard that the Pope was also terribly saddened by the news as Brother Roger was planning on visiting him in Rome.
